A Message From Hazel Brown, Our Interim Chief Executive20 Dec 2019
Leading Cornerstone into its 40th year as interim Chief Executive is both a challenging and inspiring prospect! With the rapid progress of Local Cornerstone, our digital transformation programme, and a national social care sector funding squeeze there is much to consider and address.
The recent pace of change at Cornerstone has been significant and, having listened closely to my colleagues across the country, it is great to hear of the many teams that are flourishing. However, change can be difficult and, as with any change, it’s always good to take some time to reflect and consolidate. In doing so, we will continue to consider the meaningful impact Cornerstone teams have and how the support we provide changes the lives of many.
Since the very beginning of my working career I have always worked in care; whether it’s been as a busy care assistant, working anti-social hours, doing sleepovers, or my fair share of the messy jobs, some of my most fulfilling moments have been when caring. Having been a part of Cornerstone for over 11 years, from my original appointment as Regional Manager for West of Scotland to my most recent role as Leader of Quality, I am looking forward to bringing my knowledge and experience to the role of interim Chief Executive.
Perhaps one of the most heartening reflections I have had whilst taking up my new post is the daily reminder of that which binds everyone together at Cornerstone – that everyone cares, and they care deeply. Because of that passion, I see teams across the organisation energised and empowered, taking responsibility, embracing change, and striving to provide exceptional care and services. This drive moves the organisation forward and the desire to continuously improve helps us to fulfil our charitable purpose delivering high quality care and support that enables the people we support to 'live a valued life - the life they choose'. It is truly inspiring!
When Cornerstone was established 40 years ago it was at the forefront of providing a solution to the then hospital closure programme. Since then, the charity has continued to lead the way, replacing institutional establishments with amazing homes such as Cornerstone’s Baxter View in West Dunbartonshire and The Waterfront in Argyll and Bute, as well as supporting people in their own homes and communities across the country. We have introduced important quality processes that are transparent, meaningful, and linked to improvement and, by embracing modern technology, we are now better placed than ever before to provide quality care that is inclusive, person-centred, and responsive.
As we approach 2020, and the important milestone that is Cornerstone’s 40th anniversary, I will look to ensure that the charity remains at the forefront of the social care revolution: influencing government, holding decision-makers to account, and making sure our voice, and the voices of those we care for, are heard. Through working together with the people we support, our key partners, stakeholders and fundraisers I am confident we will rise to the considerable challenges that lie ahead and meet them head on. I have every confidence that together we will continue to find creative and innovative solutions that will help transform lives and deliver exceptional care to the many people we support in communities across Scotland.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone whose lives we touch, and everyone who kindly supports the vital work that we do, a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
