“I joined Cornerstone in April 2017, after a spell working as a painter and decorator. After my gran died, I looked after my grandad, and it was during this time that I realised I’d like to pursue a career in care. My family also felt I’d be really good at this job. I felt Cornerstone would be the best place to work, as I knew they worked with a wide range of different individuals with varying support needs, who also wanted to live the same valued life that I do.
“At Cornerstone, my day typically begins at 8am, assisting the people we support with many day-to-day activities including assistance with taking their medication, help with getting dressed and having breakfast. I then help them clean their flat and any other household duties they need support with. After that I would support them with their activities and then back home for tea and evening routine. I most enjoy seeing the smile on their face and seeing how happy they are after I’ve supported them. One of the people we support loves to go to the football, and it was so great to see how much joy these outings give to him…especially when his team wins.
“When I first joined Cornerstone I started by learning about all the people we supports’ backgrounds which then helped me to understand their needs. Now that I’ve been in the job several months, newer colleagues shadow me. In a relatively short space of time it’s been great to be able to pass on everything that I have learned from my colleagues who helped me when I started. I’ve also now been to a review to get myself up-to-date on personal plans. This has given me a greater understanding of the individuals we support to help them live a valued life.”
