Cornerstone Corporate Volunteer
"I am John Addie and I work for Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) in Edinburgh. I am an associate director in the bank's risk division. Under the group's "Helping Britain Prosper" plan, all colleagues are actively encouraged to undertake volunteering activities.
"We believe that by using our core skills, resources and time, we can help strengthen community organisations throughout the UK. The group has committed to provide all colleagues with at least 8 hours of paid time to take part in volunteering activities annually. In 2016 this amounted to 278,882 hours!
"I have tried my hand at a number of activities when volunteering with Cornerstone including painting, designing a vegetable garden and even being a pirate!!
"My personal relationship with Cornerstone dates back to around 2003 when my mum had a severe stroke but was still able to stay in her own home although reliant on full time care. Over the next 8 years or so, Cornerstone provided a volunteer who would visit my mum once a week and take her shopping or take her out on a variety of trips. As a family, this was a great help to us and I know it was something my mum really looked forward to each week. When my mum passed away in 2011, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to grab a few colleagues, grab a few paintbrushes and give a little back! Six years later I am looking forward to whatever activity Cornerstone would like us to do this year, although I would prefer not to walk the plank again!”
