Scott Cameron

Support Worker

"My new role is so different to anything I've done before. After speaking to a friend who had worked in care for years, I felt something clicked that made me want to pursue the same career path. I was so inspired by his own stories, that I applied to Cornerstone that very evening. I put my heart and soul into the application, and can honestly say I haven't looked back.

"The best thing about working for Cornerstone is that it doesn't feel like a job to me. I support two men at Baxter View, Brian and Cami and love helping them to live as independent a life as possible. I love the fact that every day is different. The job is so varied, as I do everything from helping Brian and Cami with looking after their flat at Baxter View, to taking them shopping, helping them with their cooking and cleaning, and even just sitting down and having a chat and watching a movie together. I also help take Brian to and from his job at one of the local charity shops. Something we both enjoy doing together.

"I feel really humbled and lucky to have this opportunity to work with the people we support as I feel I'm now in a career that's bigger and more important than me, as opposed to working for organisations in the past that focussed more on profit.

"Even though I directly support Brian and Cami, we also have events and activities for all eight residents to come together and enjoy as a group. The monthly "Come Dine With Me" nights are always a hit where each of the people we support cook a dish and bring it to our main lounge and enjoy together. We also have takeaway Saturdays that everyone loves, and an art class on a Monday night. The great thing is, that while the facilities at Baxter View allows the people we support to enjoy independently living in their own accommodation, these group activities give them many opportunities to socialise and enjoy each others company too. It's a great balance.

"I'm still relatively new to the care sector. However, over the past few months working at Cornerstone I've come to realise that my new role is a vocation and not just a job. I couldn't recommend it enough, as it gives me so much back knowing the difference I'm making to the people we support."
