Cornerstone Converts Pedal Power Into Pounds

Teams of cyclists from across the North-east will set off on an epic virtual 35,000-mile journey this September, when they get on their bikes to tour the Olympic cities of the world in aid of Cornerstone.

Several hundred people are expected to take part in the eighth annual Cornerstone Challenge however, they will be clocking up the miles in the gym rather than on the road as they tour the virtual course.

Setting off on September 1 from London, each team of up to 30 people will virtually tour round Olympic cities, ending at the 2016 Olympics destination of Rio. One mile cycled in the gym will equal one mile on the course.

The popular annual event attracts much interest from local companies and community teams, particularly offshore workers in the oil and gas industry.  TOTAL E&P UK Limited has entered teams in the challenge every year since it first started in 2005 and their Alwyn team has been placed in the top three in the offshore league for the past three year. To date, they alone have raised more than £50,000 to support Cornerstone's work.

Vanessa Smith, Cornerstone's Regional Corporate Relations and Fundraising Co-ordinator, said that by entering a team and raising money as part of the 2012 Cornerstone Cycle Challenge, participants would make a real difference to people with disabilities in Scotland.

"The challenge is a fantastic way to promote health and fitness in your business, school, college or local community group; the aim of the game is to get fitter, have fun and raise funds to support the important work that Cornerstone does providing care and support to children, young people and adults with disabilities throughout Scotland."

One of the projects supported by the funds raised this year will be a new social housing development in Portlethen, Aberdeenshire, which will comprise flats for six people with specific support needs.

TOTAL are hosting an information and sign up event on Wednesday 1 August, 2012, from 4.30pm at their offices in Altens. Come along and find out how the challenge works and how the funds raised make a difference to the lives of the people we support.  Numbers are limited so please book your place at this event by emailing  Alternatively for full information and  to register for the Challenge go to
