Flexibility for Foster Carers

Our Children’s Fostering and Family Placement Service differs from traditional fostering model of support, in that it enables children to remain living within their own home environment, whilst being offered regular overnight supports in the home of their foster carer.

The service offers short break respite support, ranging from a few hours to a few days a month. This means we are able to offer flexibility and can cater for those who may not be able to commit to a full time fostering role but still wish to care on a part time basis. Our service allows our carers to fit their role around their current employment and other commitments.

Angela Murray, who is a part time foster carer for Cornerstone, shares her story below,

“Myself and my partner have always enjoyed being around children and wanted to get into foster care however we didn’t feel we could commit to a full time role. After talking about this to my partners mum she introduced us to Cornerstone. We got in touch with them for a chat and were surprised at how flexible the service was. The short breaks aspect was ideal for us as enabled us to take on a part time role.

We have been fostering for a year and a half now. We foster two children, a two year old girl, who has an overnight stay with us for one weekend a month, and a ten year old boy who stays with us for an overnight stay once a fortnight.

As foster carers we support the children, helping them to meet their developmental milestones, letting them experience a new environment and try new things they may not get to try out at home. We are also here to help the families of the children we support, giving them a break and chance to recharge their batteries.

I find being a foster carer for Cornerstone extremely rewarding and I get such a lot out of it. It is such a great feeling to know that you are able to provide something for others by supporting both the children and families and I love to see the children we support grow in confidence and achieve new things.”
