A group of unemployed young people who have taken part in a new initiative designed to give them an introduction to a career in social care graduated last Friday.
The Get into Social Care initiative, run by The Prince’s Trust Scotland and social care charity Cornerstone, will culminate in the young people being interviewed for real jobs with the organisation.
A celebratory event was held at the Menzies Hotel in Irvine when the young people were presented with certificates to mark their achievements.
The group of 17 to 25-year-olds have undertaken a four-week in-house course that included an introduction into all aspects of social care with accredited learning and allowed participants to gain hands on experience at several of Cornerstone’s services throughout North Ayrshire.
As well as learning about the Care Standards, and helping to look after those supported by Cornerstone, the young people have also learned how to write an effective CV, present themselves at an interview and other life skills.
The Trust’s Get into programmes are designed to give young people the skills and qualifications required to gain employment. The courses provide young people with work experience and industry recognised qualifications to access career opportunities in industries such as hospitality, oil and gas and logistics.
Hazel Brown, Cornerstone’s Regional Director, said: “Cornerstone has been delighted to be involved in the Get into Social Care project with The Princes Trust because anything we can do to encourage young people to view a career in social care as an exciting opportunity has to be a good thing.
“The event was a great success and provided us with an opportunity to celebrate all the hard work the young people have put in over the last four weeks.”
Allan Watt, director of The Prince’s Trust Scotland, said: “The Get into Social Care programme has been a great opportunity for young people to gain the vital skills and experience they need for a fantastic career in the care sector.”
“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Cornerstone. They are helping us to reach even more young people who need this vital support to reach their full potential.”
Get into Social Care is the latest course to be run as part of the Get into programme from The Prince’s Trust. The youth charity offers practical and financial support to disadvantaged young people and helps them to develop key skills, confidence and motivation that enable them to move into work, education or training or to start their own business.
