On Thursday 12th May 2016 leading Scottish social care charity Cornerstone held an event to launch a new service in Edinburgh which provides advice, support and guidance to young adult carers aged 16-25.
Local Councillor and Edinburgh Carers Champion, Norman Work, gave a speech to officially launch the ‘In Your Corner’ service, which took place at the City Chambers on the High Street.
Funded by Edinburgh City Council and run by Cornerstone, In Your Corner will give young carers across the city access to the support they need while providing practical/emotional support to another person, due to their ill-health, mental/physical disability, long term illness or drug or alcohol abuse.
John Grant, Cornerstone’s Deputy Chief Executive, believes the new service will provide that extra bit of guidance for young carers who are selflessly helping others, sometimes with very little direction.
“Young carers provide essential care and support to family members, other relatives, friends and neighbours who may be affected by disability, physical or mental health issues (often long-term), frailty, substance misuse or another condition,” he said.
“In Your Corner will support these young carers In Edinburgh to achieve their potential by providing flexible, practical and emotional advice, information and guidance. The aim is to deliver a flexible, person-centred service which will include 1-1 support, group support, drop-in sessions and other non-face-to-face support.!
