Summerlee Garden opening

Cornerstone held an open day at Summerlee Heritage Park to celebrate the hard work of the people we support who attend the Cornerstone Connect gardening group.

The garden was donated to Airdrie-based service, Cornerstone Connect, by the trustees of Summerlee.  Members of the service’s gardening group have, with the help of volunteers and corporate supporters, worked hard to transform the area into a sensory garden with raised beds and full wheelchair access.

Pat Strickland, Team Leader of Cornerstone Connect said:  "The Summerlee Garden opening event celebrates months of hard work by the members and staff of the Cornerstone Connect gardening group, corporate volunteers who have worked in the garden and local businesses who have shown their support.

“This was a chance to thank everyone for their efforts and officially open the garden for use. The people we support in the gardening group wanted to name the garden after the charities founder, Nick Baxter, who recently passed away and we think it's a fitting tribute to honour his memory."

Nick, who passed away in April after a short illness, set up Cornerstone Community Care (as it was then known) in 1982 in Aberdeen, when he brought together a small group of people to campaign for services to be based in the community for people with a learning disability.

Nick’s wife Louise who attended the event and cut the ribbon to open the garden  said she and her family were delighted with the new garden.

“We are delighted and humbled that the people supported by Cornerstone Connect should choose to name the Summerlee garden in Nick’s memory.  Nick was a very keen and active gardener and so this tribute would be very close to his heart.”

Representatives of the many corporate supporters who helped make the garden possible - Shell, Summerlee Heritage Park, Wishaw Sports Centre, Glenboig Neighbourhood House, B&Q Coatbridge, Tesco Banking, Bargeddie Safety Zone, Ernst and Young, and Barclays - attended the opening before taking part in a game of Petanque with some of those supported by Cornerstone.
