An Interview with Modern Apprentice, Nicole Johnstone This is Nicole's first social care job, she has recently passed probation and is doing a fantastic job with a really promising future in social care. Nicole is our youngest ever Modern Apprentice, starting the programme at 16 years old in community support. Nicole now works in housing support and is keen to develop. We put some questions to Nicole to get her views on her Modern Apprenticeship and how it has helped her to develop her meta-skills. Why did you decide to do a Modern Apprenticeship? I got the opportunity to do my Modern Apprenticeship only seven months in and because of this I was very worried as I was still learning about my job role. After speaking to my lead practitioner and my assessor, I felt a lot better as they explained exactly what was going to happen, it seemed like a great way of learning as it suited me better than previous education as I didnt like sitting in a classroom all day. Nicole with Shannon, a person she supports in the North Ayrshire Community Support service. What sort of meta-skills have you learnt as part of your Modern Apprenticeship? I am developing collaborating and creativity, looking to implement new activities and arrange group social events. I am adaptive as I can support lots of individuals with diverse needs in a person-centred manner. How has doing a Modern Apprenticeship helped you in your day to day job? It has helped me in many ways including the best practice, I know now what is done but shouldn't be in my service and I now change the way I would do some things. Another thing is preferred language, a lot of the words I used previous to my modern apprenticeship, Cornerstone prefers we do not use anymore and gives us an alternative, more inclusive way of say things which I have since changed. "Nicole is Cornerstone’s youngest ever Modern Apprentice starting the programme at just 16 years old. Nicole has many great qualities - she is a kind, positive and enthusiastic individual with a great attitude to learning and a fantastic role model for any young person looking to start a career in social care. Throughout the programme Nicole has been reflecting on her experiences and knowledge. This in turn has improved Nicole’s practice as she is developing her meta-skills, specifically her creativity, curiosity, and initiative. Nicole is now readily thinking of new better ways of doing things and using initiative to seek solutions. As Nicole’s assessor I am excited to see her grow and develop and sure she will have a long successful career in social care." What is the most rewarding part of your Modern Apprenticeship? The most rewarding thing about my modern apprenticeship is that I'm proud of myself for sticking with it - I have really struggled in education previously and thought this would be the same. Although I'm not finished yet, I am very happy with the work I have done so far and the things I have been able to learn. What would you say to someone thinking of doing a Modern Apprenticeship? I would 100% recommend this for someone who struggles in a classroom setting and for people who would like to learn along side doing their job. It has been really good for me to learn while working as I can experience things while I'm learning about them. Manage Cookie Preferences
